Karen and Rick at their daughter's wedding.

My wonderful friend, Karen, has passed away peacefully. I can't believe that I will never hear her voice again. I was so incredibly lucky that I knew her.

Karen never judged me; she knew the best and the worst of me and she still loved me. I never had to pretend anything with her, or be anything but myself. Karen always understood. We were far apart in distance but never in spirit.

She was one of the best people I ever knew. I can't believe she has gone. I have to ask why? Why did she have to suffer so much, why did she have to die?

Oh dear J, I am sending you HUGS right now. Tragic when those we love so much are taken from us. I sincerely hope the memories of your friendship will be a source of comfort and help you through the days and months to come.

Oh my dear, I am so sorry for the loss of your friend.

The loss of someone you love never makes sense, it's just part of life and death. You can be sure though that she will always be with you. Talk to her still, she will hear you.

It will take some time but the hurt will get easier. x

Thank you for your kind words. Many of you prayed or sent positive thoughts to Karen during her illness. I would tell her that people who had never met her were praying for her and her response was surprise and gratitude - but she never really seemed to think she was very important. In her quiet way, she was - and is - my hero.

Oh Julie, I'm so sorry to hear this sad news. She is no longer suffering and is in peace.

It's so sad when one of life's special people passes on. I'm sure over the next few days you'll be thinking of her and smiling in your sadness at the lovely memories.

Sending you big hugs and loads of love

I'm so terribly sorry about Karen. I know what it is like to lose a good friend in an untimely way. My good friend Joyce died at 32 of lupus several years ago, leaving a devastated husband and two young daughters.

My prayers are with you and Karens family.
